Signs It's Time to Replace Your Carpet
When Should You Replace Your Carpet?
An Expert Guide.
Most carpets are replaced later than they should be. The visible surface can look reasonable while the backing has failed, the underlay has compressed to nothing, or allergens have built up to the point where no amount of cleaning will shift them. As flooring specialists trading in Leicester since the 1940s, we've seen the full range - carpets that have lasted 20 years with proper care, and carpets pulling away from the gripper within five.
This guide covers the genuine warning signs that replacement is the right call, how long different carpet types realistically last, and what to think about when you're weighing up repair versus replacement.
7 Signs Your Carpet Needs Replacing
1. Persistent odour that returns after cleaning
Carpets trap odour at multiple layers, in the pile, in the backing, and in the underlay beneath. If a smell returns within days of professional cleaning, the problem is almost certainly in the backing or underlay, not the surface. Pet urine is the most common cause, as it penetrates deeply and bonds with the carpet fibres chemically. At that point, cleaning treats the symptom rather than the cause. Replacement, including a new underlay, is the only effective solution.
2. Matting and flattening that won't recover
Carpet pile is designed to spring back after compression. When fibres have broken down rather than merely been flattened, they won't recover regardless of how much you vacuum or rake the pile. Run your hand across a high-traffic area and compare it to a low-traffic spot near a wall or behind a door. If the texture and resilience are noticeably different, the carpet has physically deteriorated rather than just become dirty.
3. Stains that reappear after cleaning - known as wicking
When a stain reappears days after it seemed clean, the contaminant is wicking up from the backing or underlay as the carpet dries. This is a structural problem. The stain-resistant coating on the surface fibres has degraded and the backing is saturated. Further cleaning will not resolve it. If wicking is happening repeatedly across the carpet, replacement is the practical answer.
4. Visible wear paths and bald spots
When the pile has worn down to the point of exposing the backing, particularly in hallways, on stairs, or in front of sofas - the carpet has genuinely reached the end of its usable life. These areas also become a safety consideration on stairs, where reduced grip increases the risk of slipping.
5. Worsening allergy symptoms at home
Old carpet acts as a reservoir for dust mites, mould spores, and pet dander. Even regular vacuuming removes only surface debri, a significant proportion remains trapped deep in the pile. If household members with allergies or asthma find their symptoms worsen at home despite cleaning, the carpet is a likely contributor. Replacing it with a new carpet - or switching to hard flooring in key rooms, can produce a measurable improvement in air quality.
6. Ripples, bubbling, and lifting edges
A carpet that has developed persistent ripples across the surface has either been fitted without sufficient stretching, or the backing has broken down with age and moisture. Ripples can sometimes be power-stretched back into place by a professional fitter, but if the backing has crumbled this won't hold. Lifting edges and separation from the gripper rod are also signs that the carpet's structure has failed.
7. Damaged or crumbling underlay
Lift a corner in a discrete spot - behind a door or in a wardrobe. If the underlay crumbles, feels damp, or has compressed to almost nothing, it should be replaced regardless of the carpet's surface condition. A failing underlay accelerates carpet wear, reduces insulation and sound absorption, and is a potential source of mould. When replacing underlay, it is always worth replacing the carpet at the same time unless the carpet is still relatively new.

Should You Clean or Replace?
| Situation | Clean | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet under 5 years old, isolated staining | Yes | No |
| Stains wicking back after cleaning | No | Yes |
| Odour returning within days of treatment | No | Yes |
| Matting in high-traffic areas only | Consider pile rake / professional clean | Replace if fibres are broken |
| Carpet 10+ years old, widespread wear | Short-term fix only | Yes |
| Damaged or compressed underlay | Clean carpet, replace underlay | Replace both if carpet is also worn |
| Rippling or lifting edges | Professional re-stretch possible | Replace if backing has failed |
The Underlay Question
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does carpet typically last in a busy family home?
In a high-traffic home with children and pets, a mid-grade polypropylene carpet can show significant wear within 7 to 10 years. A good quality wool or wool-blend carpet with regular maintenance and quality underlay can last 12 to 15 years or more in the same conditions.
Can a carpet be repaired rather than replaced?
Small areas of damage, a burn, a snag, an isolated stain - can sometimes be repaired by patching with offcut material. This works best when the carpet hasn't faded, so the patch blends in. Widespread wear, failed backing, or deep odour contamination cannot be repaired and warrant full replacement.
Does the underlay need replacing at the same time as the carpet?
In most cases, yes. If the carpet has reached the end of its life, the underlay beneath it is likely in a similar condition. Fitting new carpet over old underlay compromises the result and the warranty on the new carpet may not apply.
Is it better to replace carpet or switch to hard flooring?
It depends on the room and household. Hard flooring, LVT in particular - is often a better long-term choice for kitchens, hallways, and homes with pets, as it is easier to maintain and more resistant to moisture damage. Carpet remains the preferred choice for bedrooms and living rooms where comfort underfoot and sound insulation are priorities.
